A Philosophical Lens Against Pop Culture's Woes

"This is an Intense Story That Lingers. It was an intense read. I didn't know what to expect going in so I just took a chance at the suggestion of my co-worker who read it first. I read it in one day. What stands out the most is the unique way that it uses philosophy juxtaposed against today's popular culture's woes. It perplexes and amuses at the same time and I think this is exactly what the author wanted to do. I think everyone will view it differently. Bravo!" (5 stars, Barnes & Noble)

Unforgettable. It will completely consume you.

"I was gifted this book. It is rare to find a book that completely consumes your thoughts, but Ugly Philosophy does exactly that. Dr. Harrison’s exploration of the Black Feminine Paradox and her parallel lives in academia and playboy left a massive impression on me. Before reading I didn't know much about these worlds. I am one of those people that place judgement on lifestyles that are taboo, but this book has changed my perspective on a lot of things. The raw vulnerability and sharp intellect in her writing created a story that I simply couldn't shake. It stayed with me long after I turned the final page, and I keep finding myself thinking about its core messages. If you want a book that is deeply compelling and genuinely sticks with you, this is an absolute must-read." (5 stars, Barnes & Noble)

Remarkable read!
Such a compelling, riveting - and remarkable story - couldn't stop reading. Loved the writing style too, such truth in what is conveyed, and one of the best non-fiction books I've read in years!

About

DR. MELANIE-PENNY HARRISON (BELLA MAORI)

Philosopher • Cultural Theorist • Filmmaker • Author

Official Biography

Dr. Melanie-Penny Harrison, known professionally in her creative work as Bella Maori, is a philosopher, cultural theorist, filmmaker, author, actress, and model whose work explores beauty, embodiment, race, identity, and existential thought. Based in Los Angeles, California, Harrison’s scholarship and creative practice examine how systems of power shape visibility, desire, and self-definition, particularly for Black women.

Her forthcoming memoir and philosophical work, Ugly Philosophy: Beauty, Absurdity, and the Black Feminine Paradox, investigates the moral and metaphysical dimensions of appearance in contemporary culture. Drawing upon the works of philosophers and theorists including Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Frantz Fanon, Audre Lorde, and bell hooks, Harrison explores the contradictions Black women navigate within societies that simultaneously celebrate their image while marginalizing their humanity.

Academic Scholarship

Dr. Harrison earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy with a concentration in Women’s and Gender Studies from Antioch University in 2026. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts from California State University, San Bernardino, and a double Master's, Master of Fine Arts from Full Sail University, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from University of Southern California.

Her doctoral dissertation, Mirrors of the Reel: Black Women’s Identity in American Cinema (2009–2024), examined portrayals of Black women across 31 mainstream American films through a mixed-methods research design integrating quantitative content analysis, qualitative analysis, and narrative methodology. Grounded in Critical Race Theory and intersectional feminism, the study investigated racism, patriarchy, colorism, heterosexism, institutional racism, and internalized oppression in cinematic representation.

From this research, Harrison developed Melanie-Penny’s Paradoxical Aporia Theory of Regressive Continuity (MPATRC), an original theoretical framework that argues cultural progress and regression often occur simultaneously, producing recurring cycles of representation that both challenge and reinforce systemic inequities.

Her scholarship has been presented at national academic conferences, including the National Women’s Studies Association conferences in 2019 and 2021, the National Student Leadership Diversity Convention in 2022, and the Critical Race Studies in Education Association conference in 2026.

Film, Television, and Creative Work

In 2021, Harrison wrote and directed Ugly, an award-winning web-series pilot exploring colorism in Hollywood and its impact on Black women’s identity formation. The project received numerous national and international festival honors, including awards and nominations for Best Director, Best Writer, Best Cinematography, Best Web Series, Best TV Pilot, Best First-Time Director, and Best New Media Project.

Her earlier short film, The Disillusion of Pretty Butterflies, examined the psychological effects of social media on self-esteem, body image, and contemporary notions of beauty.

In 2026, Harrison received a Best Pitch nomination from the Script Awards Los Angeles for her forthcoming psychological thriller project, Shattered Screens.

⸻

Modeling, Performance, and Media Presence

Harrison first gained widespread public visibility in 2021 when she appeared as one of the lead Black models in promotional visuals for Grammy Award-winning artist Baby Keem’s debut album The Melodic Blue, a project associated with creative contributions from Kendrick Lamar.

Earlier in her career, she modeled for Slickforce Studio and appeared in promotional campaigns associated with celebrity photographer Nick Saglimbeni. She has also walked in fashion events featuring Macy’s INC Collection and appeared in the independent feature film The Internship Games alongside Tonya Renee Banks.

Her modeling and entertainment work has been featured in publications including The Indie Post, Splash Magazine, The Influencer Magazine, BCAMS Magazine, and Stardom101 Magazine. She is also a creator on The Playboy Club, Playboy’s creator platform.

In addition to her film and academic work, Harrison has appeared in numerous podcast interviews and media features discussing philosophy, race, beauty politics, filmmaking, Black womanhood, and contemporary culture.

⸻

Philosophy and Public Thought

Across scholarship, filmmaking, performance, and literature, Harrison’s work centers on a singular question: how do systems of power shape the way people see themselves and each other?

Working through both of her public identities—Dr. Melanie-Penny Harrison, the philosopher, and Bella Maori, the artist—she bridges academic research and cultural production, treating beauty not as ornament but as a philosophical problem. Her work interrogates visibility, desire, shame, embodiment, and the paradoxes of the Black feminine experience in contemporary society.

For Harrison, the Black feminine body remains one of culture’s most powerful and contested symbols: simultaneously muse and myth, subject and object, question and answer.

Beauty Theology

"Ugly Theology is the study of how divine truth emerges through contradiction, rejection, and embodied struggle. It argues that beauty functions as a secular religion, ugliness operates as a site of epistemological insight, and the Black feminine paradox reveals the absurd structures through which society distributes value, visibility, and humanity."
